PETERSEN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM CONSTRUCTION

OVERVIEW

Pre-Press
MATT Construction, the builders of Los Angeles’ most iconic building from The Broad to The Getty Villa came to me asking for a book to be designed detailing their unique construction methods for perhaps their MOST iconic building:  The Petersen Automotive Museum.

With it’s sweeping organic exoskeleton, the Petersen instantly became one of the top buildings in LA (and on IG).  However the building process was far from straightforward and a testament to their construction methods.  The building and planning methods are almost as futuristic as the building itself.

CHALLENGES

Telling a detailed story about the construction of one of Hollywood’s most iconic buildings could get tedious without compelling design filled with photography and illustrations that capture the essence of the building and what makes it special.
Open architecture magazine spread showing Petersen Automotive Museum digital models, quotes, and text about design and engineering process.

OUTCOME

The outcome was a case study on construction that proved a worthy companion to its namesake and captured not only the essence of the building but evoked an architectural design aesthetic.
